A season of conversation and study of human sexuality
Cedar Park is entering into an intentional conversation and study in hopes to explore what inclusion means (i.e., belonging, participation, and polity) for folks within and beyond Cedar Park Church who identify as LGBTQ+. This process is happening in consultation with the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches and is being shaped by the leadership team of Cedar Park church in response to input from the congregation of Cedar Park Church.
The pastoral team has curated a list of resources – books, articles, and podcasts – for congregants to utilize. The list includes many resources recommended by the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. While this list represents a plurality of Christian perspectives it is by no means exhaustive. Many of articles and book chapters are accessible online via the document. Hard copies of the articles can be found in the CPC library as well as books that can be borrowed for 2 weeks at a time via self-checkout.
Frequently asked questions
During September and October 2021 the leadership team hosted twelve listening circles, where congregants were invited to come and share their questions, concerns, and desires related to this season in the life of the church. As the leadership team listened closely to over 100 congregants, some common questions, concerns, and perspectives were voiced by the congregation. The pastoral team has drafted brief responses to some of these themes.
Posture Shift 2021-22
One of the main resources that the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches recommends for churches wanting to have open and honest conversations about LGBTQ+ inclusion is Posture Shift. Rooted in the historically Christian view of sexuality, Posture Shift seeks to love LGBTQ+ people in the church by enhancing church inclusion, increasing family acceptance, protecting against victimization, and nourishing faith identity. Posture Shift offers training designed for church leaders, ministry teams, lay leaders, and family members that provides practical, tangible guidance for real-life inclusion and care of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families in church ministry contexts.
Cedar Park offered Posture Shift’s digital conference (watch trailer here) to the congregation in the winter of 2021-22. Through in-person video viewing and discussion sessions in the sanctuary and zoom around 120 people learned about the biblical foundation of Posture Shift, LGBTQ+ history, the experience of growing up LGBTQ+, and how to make our home and church environments safe places for those who identify as LGBTQ+.
If you did not participate in the Posture Shift Digital Conference but would still like to watch the material, you still can! Contact us and we’ll have Posture Shift send you access to the video material online so you can watch it at your convenience.
