Refugee Sponsorship

Welcoming the Stranger

Jesus said, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:31-46

In the summer of 2015 the Mennonite Brethren conference called upon local churches to partner with Mennonite Central Committee to help respond to the current global refugee crisis. In late summer, a group of people from Cedar Park, including some who have been refugees themselves, banded together to respond. After talking with other local churches who have been sponsoring refugees for years, and talking to MCC, we formed an action team to lead our sponsorship initiative.

In the Fall of 2015 MCC matched us with a young couple from Myanmar who have been living in a refugee camp in Thailand. From October to December Cedar Park raised $19,000 to support this sponsorship and began to secure housing, household goods, and put supportive resources in place. In February 2016 we welcomed this couple to Ladner. Currently we are looking for people who can help in the following areas:

  • Learning English
  • Donations of furniture, clothes, household items (contact Maria Hildebrand)
  • Orientation to Ladner
  • Employment
  • Doctor
  • Lawyer
  • Transportation for appointments
  • Donations of gift cards – bus passes, Ladner Leisure Centre
  • Financial Services –banking, taxes, etc.

Feel free to contact Colleen Sawatsky or talk to any member of the CPC Refugee Action Team: Rhode Carrier, Kathryn Coleman, Gerd & Maria Hildebrand, Henry Nickel, Jonas Schierbecker, Frank & Colleen Sawatsky.
